Experience the Wildlife of Puerto Madryn
This worldwide known Natural Reserve was declared part of the World Heritage by UNESCO, in 1999. This is a place where most of the unique wildlife spends one of its most sensitive moments of life: the breeding season. From June to April, species such as southern right whales, elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, sea lions and, occasionally, Orcas, are possible to be seen along with a very typical Patagonian ground wildlife that includes rheas, guanacos, hare and others species you probably had never heard of.
We start the tour driving from Puerto Madryn to Peninsula Valdes. It takes approximately 25 minutes to reach the entrance to the Natural Reserve. Once we pay the ticket entry we then continue driving another 20 minutes to the Visitor Center Istmo Carlos Ameghino. At this place, we’ll have a first approach with the essence of Peninsula Valdes as a Reserve and the reasons for being declared as World Heritage by UNESCO. Not only you will learn about Peninsula Valdes wildlife but also about its history. This center counts with a coffee and gift store as also restrooms. We´ll spend around 20 minutes there and this is a perfect time to have a relaxing moment to learn and prepare ourselves for the incredible experience that is just about to begin.
Now we are ready to start our journey towards inside the Peninsula: we´ll drive 78km/48 miles (approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes) along a gravel road until we reach our first stop, Caleta Valdes. We´ll spend time there in order to observe Magellanic penguins, Elephant seals and appreciate the geological formation of the Caleta.
Then we´ll continue driving around 45 minutes to the north of the peninsula to Punta Norte (Northern Point). At this stop, we will see mainly Sea lions and, occasionally, Orcas.
Is very important to know that the itinerary points may change depending on the month and weather conditions at that moment. Sometimes instead of Punta Norte (Northern Point) you can visit Punta Delgada (Thin Point) or Punta Pirámides (Pyramid Point). Our guides will decide the same day of the tour with you by sharing specific information about what places are the best for visiting that day. Their experience and knowledge of the place will provide you with the best suggestions in order to spend a memorable day enjoying the best scenery and wildlife.
On the way to each place, our guides will be looking for terrestrial wildlife such as Guanacos (Lama kind), Rheas, Patagonian hare and whatever nature decides to show you on that day. So after going around Peninsula Valdes we will drive back to Puerto Madryn.
In this tour, there is much to see but above all, we particularly suggest you listen as well. Hearing the sounds of the sea, the wind, the animals and especially the sound of silence.
