Explore Punta Tombo with Penguins
Punta Tombo Protected Natural Area is the largest continental reserve of Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) in Patagonia. This tour will let you enjoy getting in touch with nature: you’ll be able to walk among penguins (round trip approximately 3.5 km-2 miles) and depending on the time of the season you come, you’ll experience from nesting time to nursing of chicks in an unimaginable landscape.
We start the tour driving from Puerto Madryn to Punta Tombo Reserve along typical patagonian routes. We´ll make 170km/105 miles – only the last 22km/13 miles are a gravel road – to rich this protected natural area. (It takes approximately 2 and a half hours). Once we pay the Reserve ticket entry our first stop will be the Punta Tombo Interpretation Center where we can visit the different thematic rooms from the recreation of terrestrial and marine environments. Likewise is a first approach to better understand the life of the Magellanic penguin and the protected area wildlife.
Now we are ready to live this unique experience: We will walk the paths of this wonderful penguin colony. The Magellanic penguins arrives every year to breed in mid-September and they leave at the end of April. According to the month you come we will be surprised with a different stage in their breeding season so various things could be seen such as: Incubation, hatching and nursing, independence of the chicks, molting, first trips to the sea, etc.
You could see the penguins very close in their habitat, walk among them and live a fantastic journey exploring this amazing natural environment.
